Taking a risk is hard. It is scary and our primitive DNA tries to protect us from dangerous things, which is great when a bear is running towards you but not so great when you are trying to make some serious changes in your life. You body can’t tell the difference, so I have one trick that keeps me pushing towards my goals, even when I perceive the next step to be scary.
My top trick to help you take more risks in you life is to make a list of the worst things that might happen when you take the risk. For example, lets say you want to quit your job and devote your time to getting your side hustle off the job.
The worst thing that can happen is you will blow through your savings, your business won’t take off, and you will have to get another job to pay your bills. While all of that is less than ideal, at the end of the day you are still alive and you will have the ability to go back to work and provide for yourself and/or your family.
Then you can regroup, reevaluate your business plan, save up some extra cash again and give your business another go. When you put things into perspective and give yourself permission to try, to fail and to start again, taking risks do not seem as daunting.
This can be applied to more than just starting a business. It can be applied to almost any situation. You can ask yourself what is the worst thing that is going to happen if you change careers, end a relationship, have that serious conversation, move across the country, etc.
